Historie

You now drive across the newly created working island of Lauwersoog, built in 1969.

After the closure of the dike, initially only the port named Lauwersoog is created. Now the village has about 150 inhabitants, about, 40 houses, further business and port buildings and a recreation park with holiday homes. Village and Lauwersmeer celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019. The port of Lauwersoog is to become one of the five 'Blueports' in the Netherlands, by developing the local fish auction into a sustainable and multifunctional logistics centre for shrimp, fish and shellfish. Major investments are also being made to further develop the port of Lauwersoog as a tourist attraction of special allure. Part of this is the realisation of the so-called Unesco-Wadden World Heritage Centre.
