Historie

The past comes alive in the heart of the North Groningen village of Warffum. Discover the countryside of over a hundred years ago at Het Hoogeland open-air museum. Look around twenty old buildings and experience how people used to live and work. Living rooms, bedrooms and workshops are decorated with such an eye for detail that it seems as if the inhabitants were away for a while.

The open-air museum was founded in 1959 as Stichting Landbouwkundig, Oudheidkundig, Kunstminend Museum Het Hoogeland. The collection consists of movable property as well as real estate. The area designated as museum grounds is located on the highest point of the mound in the centre of the village of Warffum. Ten houses, two school buildings and a stable were located on this site in 1959. Most of the buildings of the open-air museum stand where they have always stood. Supplemented by a few buildings from the region, they give an authentic and fascinating picture of everyday life around 1900. Over the years, numerous buildings have been acquired and the site has been expanded to its current size.
