Where the Haansvaart and Hoofdstraat intersect is a fine view of the course of the Haansvaart. The clever arable farmer Hendrik Haan had this canal dug in 1866. Its connection to the Schildmeer lake brings in fertile mound soil and drains poor sandy soil. Our tip for a next visit is the Helmster Ommetje by Landschapsbeheer Groningen. This walking route passes the Haansluis (national monument) near the Schildmeer.
