New Beerta is a state-designated protected village sight. It is a ribbon village with large Oldambtster farmhouses along the route, some larger and more stately than others. In Oldambt, you will find more than 200 of these surviving giants from the heyday of the Grain Republic. That size makes the Oldambtster farms unique, and because there are so many of them, they help define the Oldambtster landscape. But how do you maintain such an immense structure? Unfortunately, quite a few of the farms are in a state of dilapidation. Along Nieuw Beerta's Hoofdweg, you see not only magnificent monuments but also ruins with holes in the roof, collapsed barns, complete ruins. "Rotten molars" are what these ruins are called. A listening walk about this was organised in 2021 by the theatre group The Peer Group, titled: The Crying Brides.
