Historie

The Reformed church in Duurswoude was built in the 13th century with bricks made of Frisian clay. At the time, this was seen as an innovation, as many buildings were still made of wood. The church has so-called Norsemen gates, small (now bricked up) doors on the north and south sides of the church. Several meanings are known about the Norsemen gates. E.g. this one: north door for the women, south door for the men. Inside, the men sit on the south side, the side of light, the women on the side of darkness, i.e. north. A less dark detail: the church has a famous Schnitger organ.
