Route Drenthe: the backyard of Groningen
"You'll just have a backyard like this". So begins the introduction to our latest route: Drenthe: backyard of Groningen". You travel from Groningen's Onlanden to d'Olle land of Drenthe.
Under the smoke of the city of Groningen there is a world, truly different from everything else in the province of Groningen.
Grand, expansive, from wet to dry, from low to high, from moor to sand, ancient, intimate, and much more, and truly beautiful!
Highlights of the route include:
- Impressive new nature of De Onlanden

- Beautiful picturesque villages in the Drenthe countryside

- Colony of Weldadigheid, UNESCO monument

In the villages of Drenthe you will find the best addresses for a cup of coffee with a delicacy from Drenthe. During the route, you will be given some tips for this.
Driving route with the LocalGroningen app
The route can be driven with the route app. The app provides lots of information in text blocks and with audio clips you can listen to while driving. Do you want to take part in the quiz questions, or just tour and enjoy? Both options are possible.

### How does it work?
- Haven't installed the LocalGroningen route app on your mobile phone yet? Then do so first.
- Go to the APP-STORE, or GOOGLE-PLAY, find the LocalGroningen app, download it, and create an account.
- Then choose your route and date, and use the 'online' button (top right of the screen), to book the route.
- After the booking is completed, you will receive confirmation via e-mail, containing a link. The link contains instructions on how to use the app (handy if you want to read it at your leisure), and a first introduction to the region you will be driving in.
- You can find your booked route under 'my purchased routes'.
- Check in the app whether the correct date is visible at the top of the screen. If not, you can change it yourself.

Als het in Drenthe flink geregend had........
stonden in Groningen de straten blank.
Reden: de hoogtes in het Drentse gebied gaan van ruim boven NAP, tot in de Groningse Onlanden, ruim onder NAP.
Al het water van het Drents Plateau kwam dus samen in het lage Groningse kwelderlandschap van De Onlanden, en stroomde zo via de stad Groningen, naar de Waddenzee. Tijdens de route hoor je over de omwentelingen hierin.
Het is land dat gevormd is tijdens de verschillende ijstijden, van zo'n 2,5 miljoen jaar tot 12.000 jaar geleden.
Ofschoon de eerste bewoning dateert van duizenden jaren voor onze jaartelling, is het hele gebied lange tijd dunbevolkt gebleven.
En weet je wat zo bijzonder is?
In sommige oeroude natuurgebiedjes is het alsof de tijd echt eeuwenlang heeft stil gestaan. Een glooiend, ongerept landschap vol met bloemen, onontgonnen heideland, oude houtwallen, een kronkelend beekje, kleine bolle akkers. Geen hoogspanningsmast, windmolen, zonneweide, megastal te zien.
In het 2500 ha. groot, nieuwe natuurgebied De Onlanden, is de natuur in relatief korte tijd, haar eigen gang gegaan, met een spectaculaire omwenteling van agrarische productiegrond naar waterrijke natuur.
Er is nog zoveel meer te vertellen over dit unieke, en tamelijk onbekende stukje Noord-Nederland.
De route 'de Achtertuin van Groningen', gaat zeker voor verrassende ontdekkingen zorgen.
