Route Hondsrug and Hunzedal | UNESCO GLOBAL GEO PARK
Less than 25 km from the city of Groningen, you can endlessly enjoy the UNESCO Global Geopark De Hondsrug and Hunzedal.
Get ready to discover this Drenthe paradise. You will go back to the Ice Ages, taking a journey across the magnificently rolling landscape of the Hondsrug with sand drifts, heaths, forests. Also wonderful are the panoramic views of the Hunzedal and the meandering river valleys of the many small rivers.
Did you know that this area is counted among the most photogenic landscapes in the Netherlands by many landscape photographers?
Highlights of the route include:
- Beautiful Drenthe villages with characteristic Saxon farmhouses
- Various hunebeds, including the hunebed with a much-talked-about name "De Duvelskutte"

The touristy, crowded places are avoided as much as possible. During the route, you will discover the smaller gems with special meaning and stories.
Driving route with the LocalGroningen route app
The route app provides directions using navigation. While driving, you get a lot of information, both in text blocks and audio clips. The audio clips are great to listen to while driving. Do you want to participate in the quiz questions, or just tour and enjoy? Both options are possible.

How does it work?
- Haven't installed the LocalGroningen route app on your mobile phone yet? Then do so first.
- Go to the APP-STORE, or GOOGLE-PLAY, find the LocalGroningen app, download it, and create an account.
- Then choose your route and date and book your route
- After the booking is completed, you will receive confirmation via email, containing a link. The link contains instructions on how to use the app (handy if you want to read it at your leisure), and an initial introduction to the region you will be driving in.
- Your booked route can be found under 'my purchased routes'.
- Check whether the correct date is visible at the top of the screen. If not, you can change it yourself.
