Historie

Initially, barracks stood here, as accommodation for the mud workers, working in the CC polder. After the war, it became an internment camp for NSB members. In 1953, the camp was repurposed as a place for 311 South Moluccans to live. Over time, they felt reasonably at home there. The children went to local schools and made friends, the colourfully dressed women went weekly to the market in Winschoten to buy the ingredients for their delicious Moluccan dishes. It is a forgotten tragedy that four days before Christmas in 1961 they had to leave the camp under armed escort for a terraced house in Foxhol. Not even a telegram to the Queen helped prevent this. The barracks were immediately demolished after leaving. The planted poplar grove was named after the last residents as a reminder. Next to the grove are now four hiker's huts owned by the Groninger Landschap.
