Historie
St Andrew's Church was built in 1238 to replace a demolished predecessor. Together with the weem (= vicarage/museum Helmantel) across the street and the church, this is a beautiful place to unwind. But appearances can be deceiving. In 1400, this spot was the scene of a gruesome murder. Headman Haye Wibben fled from his enemy Eppe Nittersum. He hid with his men in the old meadow. They were smoked out, whereupon they fled to the church. There Haye was beaten to death.
