To the right of the road, the artwork The StadSpaden, by artist Hans Mes. The StadSpaden sculpture literally and figuratively creates a look back at the history of the city of Stadskanaal. Two 8-metre-high spades were inserted into the bank. From here, the road led across the water to the city of Groningen, with the towpath alongside. Where once the peat barges sailed in traffic to the city, now recreational boaters sail their boats along this unique waterway. A poem by the artist is welded onto the blade of both spades. The poems are about the city's identity, built up by a lot of hard labour.
