Beerta means "hamlet" and originated as a peat extraction village. After the reclamation and rise of arable farming, many agricultural workers lived here, joining the Communist party. This party has traditionally had a strong position in Beerta. In the 1980s, Hanneke Jagersma was the youngest and first CPN mayor in the Netherlands.
