Historie

The church of Zuurdijk certainly dates from 1287, but building traces found later make it plausible that the church is about 50 years older. Over the centuries, the church has undergone many changes; the tower was rebuilt in 1789 and the church was 'shortened' quite a bit. In 1849, this originally 13th-century hall church was thoroughly rebuilt, losing much of its medieval character. Originally, it had brick vaults, the arches of which can still be recognised in the wall. The church was thoroughly restored in 2001. The tower clock is one of the oldest in the Marne; the bell - named Maria - was cast by 'Herman' in 1482. The church and churchyard are home to many wealthy farmers from Zuurdijk, one of the richest villages in Groningen in the first half of the 19th century. On the tower of church in Zuurdijk is a merman. It bears the letters M R. Possibly the weather vane was donated by Melle Roelfs, farmer at 't Huis Ewer (1649 - 1690).
