Westerweg is unpaved towards the Giezelbaarg. On weekends, it can be crowded with walkers here. Stop to walk briefly to the** Giezelbaarg **, Groningen's lugubrious hill. This hill has borne the name "Giezelbaarg" for centuries. It seems quiet and peaceful there, but "a long time ago terrible things happened here". Nowhere else in Groningen was superstition so great. In the Middle Ages, this was where convicts were put to death. Later during the 80-year war, witches were burned here. Wedde Castle was where the accused were first terribly tortured and where the witch trials took place, before they were taken to the stake. At least 20 women are known to have met such a terrible death at this place. For about 25 years, a new tradition has emerged in which more than a thousand people participate every year. In winter time, a musical evening walk is organised around the Giezelbaarg.
PLEASE NOTE: Drive piece of Westerweg 180 metres back to Meiënweg and turn left.
