You are now standing on the spot where the Hanckemaborg once stood. The contours of the old borg are incorporated into the road here. The stone house from which the borg arose is first mentioned as 'die stede' in 1540. The Hanckema family and numerous other families occupied the borg. Several street names in Zuidhorn include the names of the families, e.g. Clant, Bindervoet and Gelderman.
The Hanckema borg was also demolished in the late 19th century, and many stones and ornaments were reused in villas on the distinguished avenue De Gast in Zuidhorn.
