Historie
Abel Tasman (1603-1659) was an experienced sailor in the service of the VOC who was sent on several expeditions to the East Indies from 1639. Tasman came into the world in Lutjegast. Like many other young men from the northern Netherlands, he went to sea. In 1633, Tasman entered the service of the VOC and in 1636 he emigrated to Batavia with his wife and daughter.
