Historie

The Nicolaïkerk or Nicolaaskerk is a Romano-Gothic hall church. This largest church in the Groninger Ommelanden belongs to the Top 100 of the National Heritage Service. The oldest part of the church dates from the early 13th century. A church may have stood on that spot before. After the Reduction of Groningen, the Roman Catholic Nicolaïkerk converted to Protestantism in 1594. This had consequences for the interior. All Catholic features disappeared and the walls were whitewashed. The Nicolaïkerk has a two-manual organ built in 1744 by Albertus Antoni Hinsz, which incorporates pipes from the organ by Daniël Bader and Anthoni Waelckens that had been there since 1638.
