The arboretum Notoarestoen in Eenrum contains an international plant collection with the Japanese temple tree, Chinese pennant tree, American Sequoia''s, rhododendrons and much more. The garden is the life's work of notary Smit from Eenrum, hence the name ''Notoarestoen'': Gronings for ''garden of the notary''. A botanical garden specialising in trees and shrubs, created in the 18th and 19th centuries to try out native greenery, with the aim of later spreading it further in its own country. Today, in addition to being a collection of greenery, an arboretum is often a centre of scientific research and education.

Notary Smit from Eenrum started planting his special tree collection in a bare 2-hectare meadow in 1968. With the help of 30 volunteers from the village, hundreds of trees and shrubs were planted. Over the years, his love for the rhododendron grew. From far and wide, he obtained special species: America, England, Denmark. Cuttings were regularly transported to Eenrum in his suitcase. A wealth of trees and rhododendrons unique to Europe: 600 different species of rhododendrons and 400 non-native tree species. And, last but not least, special undergrowth, including Stein plants and the wild cyclamen.
