Historie

The Bernleft Theatre is a small private theatre. The theatre is home to director Albert van Ham who performs with changing actors, under the name Toneelgroep Helwerd, Behind the farm is the mound Helwerd. One of the oldest mounds in Groningen with a special significance for the spread of the Catholic faith in Groningen. People have lived here since long before the beginning of our era. The Helwerd mound now lies abandoned in the country, as a silent witness to an important event in Groningen's history.

Indeed, according to the stories, wierde Helwerd plays an important role in spreading the Catholic faith in Groningen. Evangelist Liudger was commissioned by Charlemagne in 787 to preach the gospel and found churches. Where it failed to take off in Friesland and the Humsterland, Liudger succeeded. The singer and poet Bernlef had the key role in this. Bernlef was a blind singer/poet, who mainly performed pagan songs.
