Rudolf Agricola was , born in 1443 in Baflo, on the spot where his statue now stands. He was one of the most important early humanist scholars of the Northern Netherlands and is considered the forerunner and inspiration of Erasmus. To literary and philosophy connoisseurs, he was a historical great of international stature. The humanists wanted to base every form of knowledge on the literature and culture of classical antiquity. Agricola was a very versatile man. He was one of the first above the Alps to master ancient Greek. He could write in Latin, drew, composed music for flute, played the organ, was interested in singing, could box well and was a good orator. He also designed organs, including the organ of the Martini church in Groningen. Among other things, Agricola was secretary of the city of Groningen. In 1484, he became its representative at the court of Emperor Maximilian I of Habsburg. This monument is placed in memory of this versatile northerner.
