The esdorp lies - elongated - on a sandy ridge in a bend of an Ice Age-derived stream valley of a branch of the Ems, the Vanished Ems. The oldest mention of Sellingen is found in an agreement between the bishop of Münster and the Westerwolders of 1316. Around the village of Sellingen are some of the most beautiful moorland, forest and nature areas in Groningen, with a huge number of walking, cycling and boating routes.
