In the far north of the mainland of the province of Groningen, a few kilometres east of Westernieland, lies Noordpolderzijl with the smallest open sea port in the Netherlands. Ebb and flow have free play here and only at high tide is it possible to sail in and out of this unique little harbour. Noordpolderzijl was created after the Noordpolder was reclaimed. Between 1980 and 1985, the northern sea dike was raised to the level of the delta and a modern drainage pumping station was built. The old sluice lost its function and was bricked up. Together with a stone mosaic installed on the dike, it now forms a work of art to commemorate the raising of the dike. The former lockkeeper's house houses "t Het Zielhoes, a nostalgic brown café.
