If you look carefully between the trees, or turn left into the cemetery car park, you will see the Bakkeveen bell seat. The bell seat marks an important place in history; the Mariënhof monastery stood here in the Middle Ages. The bell with special inscription is dedicated to this monastery. The bell has the following inscription: "MARIJE IS MY NAMME, YN NEITINS OAN MARIENHOF. I MOANJE DE LIBBENEN EN ROU OM DY'T GRIEJE. I AM GETTEN FOAR BAKKEFEAN TROCH LAUDY AD MMXX".
Translated into Dutch: Marije is my name, in memory of the Marienhof. I mourn for the living and mourn for those who mourn. I will be fetched for Bakkeveen by Laudy 2020.
