Toeristische hotspot

Besides Groningen, Appingedam is the only place in the province with city rights. It probably started in the tenth century as a settlement along the Delf (now the Damsterdiep). Because the town was located on a flowing river, it soon became a thriving trading centre. Seagoing ships came to port here and goods were traded. But Appingedam was also a centre in the region in legal and administrative terms.

With the industrialisation of the twentieth century, Appingedam retained this central position. This development also created more space for the middle class, banking, education and social facilities.

Currently, the picturesque town is especially popular among tourists and day trippers. They come for the famous hanging kitchens and the many other national monuments that can be seen here. It is a nice little town that is definitely worth visiting or taking a short walk through.
