Park the car here. Wedde Castle was and is a special place in Westerwolde. Every reason to get out and walk around here. (Museum generally open Wednesday-Sunday 12.00 - 17.00). Wedde Castle is first mentioned in a 1391 treaty between the Westerwolders and the heirs of one Addinga family. The Westerwolders had great difficulty with the tyrannical rule of this family, and sought the help of the city of Groningen, which subsequently took over the rulership of the borg. Many changes in power took place afterwards, including troops of Charles V, William Louis, then the Spaniards, and Bommen Berend also made himself heard. For centuries, the borg was also used as a court of justice, where the drost (including the Dortmund family Haselhoff) of Wedde and the judges from Vlagtwedde and Bellingwolde sat. Many convicts were tortured and branded here, and death sentences were also pronounced there. Those sentenced to death were executed on the gallows hill 'Giezelbaarg', just outside Wedde. Locally, there is a myth that borg and gallows hill were connected through a subterranean passage. You can encounter the Giezelbaarg a little further along this route.
Since 2013, the Borg has been owned by the municipality of Westerwolde and managed by the Burcht Foundation. Children in particular are now welcome in the now famous children's hotel. There is also a restaurant and museum
After viewing the Burcht, return to the Main Road and continue on the left.
