Historie

From 1939, thousands of unemployed people were forced by the Dutch government to work to reclaim the salt marshes (the mud flats) above Westernieland. Just under 1,000 people lived in barracks in the Slikken camp. During the 2nd WW, the hard work continued. From '46 - '51, Camp de Slikken became a punishment camp for NSB members. A kind of 'Siberia of the highlands' in the Netherlands. Most of the barracks have been demolished. Three more barracks are now in use as group accommodation.
