Picturesque Huizinge has numerous characteristic buildings and, in conjunction with its planting and location, the village has "protected villagescape" status. The village has 'produced' a few famous people. First of all, one of the most famous Groningers ever: Pastor Emo of Bloemhof, also known as Abbot Emo, Emo of Huizinge or Emo of Friesland (present-day Groningen). With the Pope's permission, Emo founded the Bloemhof monastery of Wittewierum in 1212, about which he composed the famous Chronicle of the Monastery of Bloemhof in Wittewierum. This chronicle has been preserved in several manuscripts, which is incredibly special. The second well-known figure is scion of the preacher family Huizinga, the historian Johan Huizinga, see place Melkema.
Since 16 August 2012, Huizinge is best known for the worst earthquake in Groningen to date, with a magnitude of 3.6. Many houses here and in distant surroundings were severely damaged. This quake was the prelude to the national debate on gas extraction, prompting residents and politicians in the province to take action and protest. The decision to further open the gas tap in 2013, after the quake in Huizinge, is striking and much debated. Among other things, this choice is the subject of the parliamentary inquiry to be held in the second chamber in 2022
