It Paradyske
The route from Kollum to It Paradyske shows a clear transition from a dike landscape on the sea clay, open meadowland with scattered farms, to a more country estate landscape with old alder and oak avenues. The engaging stretch of nature, towards Veenklooster, has had the name "It Paradyske" for centuries. There are two explanations as to where this name comes from. The nicest one is this: in Veenklooster stood the nunnery 'The Mount of Olives', and near Gerkesklooster the monastery for monks. At the time, the nuns and monks regularly met by the water (a pingo) "in this blissful little region", and since then it has been called 'It Paradyske'.
