Historie
Beeldbepalend

Makkinga has a history that goes back to before the Middle Ages and originated as an agricultural settlement. Makkinga lay in a strategic location and was the only village in its wide surroundings to have a Frisian noble house, the Lyclama-stins. However, this was demolished in 1829. Gradually, a village developed around the church and the water pump, both of which can still be found in the centre. Take a seat on the bench - in front of the statue of the Hunningdaenker (honey thinker) by Belgian artist Carlo Mistiaen. Whoever took a seat on the bench heard bee buzzing from the youngster's mouth. Theme: A youth in the prime of his youth, just before decay, with the thought: "All the sweetness of my soul keeps on thinking honey". Besides a long past, Makkinga is the first village in the Netherlands to be allowed to call itself 'road sign free', despite this, a number of road signs can still be seen.
