Mill De Vier Winden in Pieterburen dates from 1846, but centuries before that a corn mill must have stood on this spot. In a document from 1628 - the year the infamous tax on pumping was raised - there was a standerd mill here, the oldest type of wooden mill in the Netherlands. The Four Winds has two large, double doors. This allowed horse and cart to enter on one side and, fully loaded, exit on the other. The Four Winds is an octagonal tower mill. The tower is the wooden walkway on top of a (usually) stone substructure. Rack mills are therefore up to 12 metres higher than ground sailors. Groundsailers are mills whose sails almost touch the ground. They are usually found in built-up areas. After all, more height is needed there to catch enough wind. Ground-sailors are in open fields. Text above the entrance: "Here they grind grain into dust. Here one peels bark from the host grain or O mankind! Will learn from this, That you too will one day return to dust Rebuilt 1846".
