Historie

The village of Oudeschip owes its name to a ship that ran aground here in 1760, was pulled over the dyke and served as a home for many years. Only after the Oostpolder, on the right side of this road, was drained did the village develop here. Since the arrival of Eemshaven, there has been a fear in Oudeschip that the same thing is happening here as with former villages near Delfzijl: i.e. demolition and making room for industry. In 1979, Oudeschip seemed to meet the same fate, but because Eemshaven did not grow as fast as expected, the villages on this dike continued to exist.

Eemshaven has developed robustly over the past 30 years and is the hotspot in the north for energy transition (wind power, hydrogen, batteries), high-tech and data centres. There is a high demand for new business plots and wind farms, for which the Oostpolder in particular is being looked at. The plans have now been presented. That this is going to have major consequences for Oudeschip polder village, among others, is evident.
