The Dollard region was once a prosperous area. Along the Ems was a dike with all kinds of settlements and villages behind it. Drainage made the peatland available for cattle breeding, but dried out the peatland, resulting in subsidence. Due to the 'Cosmas&Damanius flood' in 1509, over 25000 ha of land were lost. Reclamation in the following centuries reclaimed some of it, including this polder, named after one of the 'drowned' villages: Reiderwolde.
