Historie
This mudflat village belongs to the group of oldest settlements in the Groningen clay area. Being close to the sea, the village has a long history of struggle with water. Twice, the village was almost wiped off the map by rising waters and storms. After the Christmas flood of 1717, a sea wall was started, preventing further floods. If you drive out of the village now, you can see the polder where the sea once was. The old village centre has been designated by the government as a protected village sight.
